Redesigning a students' union website around accessibility, so every student can find what they need on any device.
Project Summary
- Client: Coventry University Students' Union
- Industry: education
- My role: Frontend Designer
- Core tasks: UX & layout design, Accessibility, Responsive front end
- Appointed date: Feb 2019
- Completion: May 2019
For prospective students, parents and the wider community, a students' union website is often the first impression of university life. Coventry University Students' Union (CUSU) wanted that impression to be welcoming, clear and open to everyone.
What I did
- Layout and UX. Redesigned navigation and page structure so students can quickly find events, societies, support and advice.
- Accessibility first. Designed to current standards for users with visual, auditory and motor impairments: strong contrast, keyboard navigation, semantic structure and readable type.
- Responsive design. Layouts that work as well on phones as on desktops.
- Stakeholder collaboration. Worked closely with union staff and administration to turn their goals into the design.
The result
The redesign gave CUSU a more inclusive, easier-to-use website that supported student recruitment and strengthened the union's image in the community.
